One thing

“One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.” Psalm 27:4
Everyone has ‘one thing’ in life that they desire more than anything else. For some people it’s recognition, for others it’s money. For the Christian there can only be one ‘one thing’: God. Our number one priority in life is to know God and be known by Him. At the end of the day, when we step into eternity, that is the only thing that will matter. Jesus told us to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things [clothes, food, etc.] will be given to you as well” (Matt. 6:33). David writes here of his desire to dwell in God’s house all the days of his life. Elsewhere in the psalms we read, “Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked” (Ps. 84:10). While we don’t have a physical temple where God’s presence resides, we have something far better. The Holy Spirit is dwelling within us. We can be in His presence any time of day, because He is with us always. But how often do we neglect to commune with Him, to spend time in prayer and reverence of Him?
